Green Chef Meal Kit Delivery Service Review & Giveaway

screenshot-2017-03-01-at-9-32-05-pmBy now, I’m sure you know what a meal delivery system is, but if not, it is a company that sends the ingredients & recipes to make whole meals right to your door. Yes! You don’t have to leave the house or research a recipe. They do all of that for you! The ingredients are fresh and in this case, with Green Chef, all USDA-certified organic! boxingredYou can choose from the 2-person plan (3 meals for 2) or the family plan (2 meals for 4) delivered each week. There are also many diet specific options available for those who might be gluten-free, Paleo, Vegan, Vegetarian or have allergies. Depending on which plan you choose, meals range from $10.49-$13.49 each (not including shipping).

The first meal we made was BBQ chicken with sweet potato fries and a cabbage & green apple slaw. It didn’t take long to prepare and was easy to make, plus it was very good about not giving me a lot of dishes to have to clean up afterwards.bbqchickThe BBQ chicken was moist, the sauce had a really great flavor and the sweet potato fries were seasoned well. Unfortunately, the salad was disappointing. It was watery and tasteless. The poppy seed dressing only had about 5 poppy seeds in it. Also the portions were pretty small. The meal only had 3 small chicken breasts for 4 people. This worked okay for us because we have toddlers, but if we had teenagers, the family plan would have left us really hungry. The intention is that you serve it all on a big platter, family style. I love that idea, but in the end, I didn’t want to have to wash another dish. Overall, it was good and will be a dish that I will make again.bbqdishThe second meal we made was Greek Pasta & Meatballs. This meal said it would take about 35 min. to make and took me double or triple that amount of time. It had a lot of steps and a lot more dishes to clean. There were sooo many little things to chop and dice and prepare and I needed a lemon zester, which I don’t own. I wish some of that had already been prepped for me. chopThe tomatoes tasted weird, I thought it was because they were under ripe, so I used my own tomatoes, thinking I’d let these ripen, but 2 days later they were all moldy. The whole dish was really flavorless, except for the olives and gremelata (which we didn’t care for). The meatballs had decent flavor, but were dry. The kids just ate the pasta noodles and I don’t blame them because Jason and I didn’t really care for the meal either. I ended up putting a jar of spaghetti sauce over the top of the leftovers which moistened up the meatballs and gave the dish some much needed flavor. This is not a dish that we ever care to have again. mbdish.jpgThoughts…..I think with some extra customization before ordering, we could have a had a better experience. Unfortunately, since we were trying it for free, we didn’t get to make special requests or pick our meals. I love trying new recipes with beautiful fresh and healthy ingredients, but in the end, my family would have been happier eating out. We would pay about the same price, get to pick from more options and have nothing to clean up but the children. I love the idea of Green Chef and I think with more options, we would love this service as maybe a monthly treat. Weekly would be too much for our busy family.

WOULD I RECOMMEND? No, but yes. There are a lot of meals I haven’t tried and some look really delicious! I have heard excellent things from other reviewers. I will not continue the program because the price point for our family is a little too much for the small portions. With that being said, I had fun cooking up some new meals and would definitely recommend trying if you have a promotional coupon code, then you can decide whether this program is right for you and your family.

Thanks for the review. I have been wondering about trying a meal subscription box. I think they could be helpful for teaching kids how to cook.

  2. The Black Rice Stir fry looks pretty great! Sorry to hear one of the meals was disappointing, but the first one sounded really yummy. I think this as a once a month treat sounds like a great plan.
