How to Make a Perfect Hard Boiled Egg

So it’s almost Easter and I’ve been making a lot of hard boiled eggs lately.  For one, our family got a YMCA membership recently so we have been pumping iron (haha-I think I’ve dropped the kids off in childcare more times to just read than to exercise).  Anyways, we’re also trying to eat healthier.  Eggs are a good source of protein and protein helps keep you full and they have no carbs or sugar.  Two- Easter eggs.  I know most people use the little plastic ones and fill with candy, but the real ones are such fun to decorate together.  So I thought it might be helpful to do a quick tutorial on how to make a hard boiled egg.  Maybe you all already know, but I’ll be honest, it took me awhile to figure out how to get them just right without being underdone or the shell sticking to the egg (which is super irritating) or the yolk turning green.  So here it is.  The basics.  If you have any tips to add, please feel free to share with me in the comments!  I love hard boiled eggs with some sea salt and pepper or diced up for Chicken Salad sandwiches.  Oh, and I almost forgot- Deviled Eggs!  Yum.  How do you like them best?

Ingredients

  • Eggs (Older eggs are better)
  • Water
  • Ice

Instructions

  1. Fill a saucepan 3/4 full of water.
  2. Gently place eggs in water (so that shell doesn’t crack).
  3. Turn the heat on med-high until it begins to boil.
  4. Lower heat just a bit and let simmer for 10 min. (Set a timer!)
  5. At the 10 min. mark, leave eggs on the heat, but prepare a bowl full of ice and cold water. Turn off the heat and with a slotted spoon or tongs, gently place eggs in ice water.
  6. Let cool in water for at least 15 min. before placing in fridge.
  7. Tip: To distinguish hard boiled from reg. eggs in your fridge, use a marker and mark with a star or HB.

I recently started to add hard boiled eggs to my diet a couple times a week. These are some great tips! I also had someone tell me to add a little salt to the water before you start to cook and it makes them easier to peel. It really works!!

Interesting! I know that adding salt will make your water boil faster, but I’d never heard that it makes them easier to peel.
